We were immediately grabbed by the superb craftsmanship and finish of this C1 credenza by designer Marcus Friesl. A piece of thin folded metal forms the shell of the piece and also holds the upper and lower drawers in position. The draws are suspended from the sides - appearing to float cleanly. Using both time honoured craftsmanship and modern technology, Friesl has created a furniture piece that not only has character, but is also finished to an extremely high standard.

Completed in 1994, the Igualada Cemetery was designed by Enric Miralles and to be a place of reflection and memories. After 10 years of construction, their envision of a new type of cemetery was completed and began to consider those that were laid to rest, as well as the families that still remained.

The Igualada Cemetery is understood by the architects to be a “city of the dead” where the dead and the living are brought closer together in spirit.  As much as the project is a place for those to be laid to rest, it is a place for those to come and reflect in the solitude and serenity of the Catalonian landscape of , Spain. More on the project after the break.

Miralles and Pinos conceptualized the poetic ideas of a cemetery for the visitors to begin to understand and...

Now in its fourth year, Noho Design District has taken on a few different permutations over the years, encompassing various pop-up exhibitions from a tiny Japanese butcher shop to a four-story lumber company headquarters (which happen to be on the same block, no less), reflecting both the changes within the neighborhood and the landscape of American design as a whole. Once again, our friends Jill Singer and Monica Khemsurov of Sight Unseen have masterminded a neighborhood-wide celebration of young and emerging designers. In addition to partnering with several co-conspirators such as Future Perfect and American Design Club, they've also curated the flagship Noho Next group exhibition, featuring 13 handpicked studios that comprise a showcase of design talent.

    NohoNext2013-2.jpg

The exhibition took place over the weekend at Subculture, the event space in the basement of the 45 Bleecker Street Theater, which hosted Tom Dixon's London Underground exhibition last year. (I don't know if I'm dating myself with the reference, but I remember going to the Crosby Connection sandwich shop when they occupied the cafe a few years back...). Although it happens to be closing as I write this, hopefully our documentation can serve as future reference.

20.05.2013Hong Kong based designer Danny Fang has designed the Checkmate lighting collection for Hive. With their warm candle-like light, these chess pieces are sure to give a royal ambient interior. Hand-laid salago fiber offers a beautiful contrast to the smooth gold-leafed shade interior. According to the designer, “In the game of chess, the position of all pieces is crucial to win or to lose. We want to position our lights just as careful and strategic to get the best ambiance in our environment. The Check Mate collection consist of a complete set of chess pieces that all have their own character and size. One can choose from the modest Pawn all the way up to the luxurious King and Queen to fit the position you need lit. With their warm candle like light that is being reflected of the gold leafed inside together with the tactile paper pulp skin the Check Mate collection brings warmth to any environment.”All of them- king, queen, bishop, knight, rook and pawn- are available in cream, grey, terracotta and black.

speaker0.jpg On booths that make you feel from afar like you’re quick approaching the enthralled crowd around a mind blowing street performer as you come down the aisle… Oswalds Mill Audio’s ICFF booth had that effect. Only as you approach, you realize the group of (mostly guys) are clustered and staring at the beauty and silently listening to the sounds of their impressive speakers! While their loudspeakers, amps, record players, and more are all stunning, the OMA Mini’s beauty was burned into my memory ~ so naturally i had to share that with you first!

Their speakers use a beautiful proprietary conical horn, “designed for the neodymium compression driver selected to achieve optimal performance, and cast in aluminum by a foundry in Pennsylvania,” and it’s perched on the woofer enclosures (either birch of bamboo), all designed by David D’Imperio, on a solid carbon steel stand! You can also pair the set up with a Mini Sub, whose face feels slightly hannibal mask like. As for the technical audio details, “The Mini is a very high efficiency speaker, at approx. 95db/1w/1m, and is 8ohm. This means you can use just about any amplifier with the Mini, from very low powered single ended triode amps (SETs) to high powered solid state amps, as the Minis uses professional drivers, not HiFi drivers, which distort at lower levels. These types of professional drivers offer far greater performance, and bullet proof reliability. They do not extend to the first octave, as hifi drivers do,...
