The numbers don't lie: thanks to advances in medicine and other trends in culture, the average age of the population is increasing: according to a report by AT Kearney, the life expectancy of folks in highly developed countries is increasing by one year every five years. Yet this growing demographic is largely neglected by major brands, which perpetually look to younger generations of consumers as the relevant segment of savvy early adopters.
Of course, this reasoning—the earlier you reach your audience, the better—holds true for Heineken's current Ideas Brewery challenge to design a better drinking experience for the 60–70-year-old drinker. Submitting your entry as soon as possible affords a significant advantage in terms of garnering public votes, one of the four criteria for advancing to the round of six finalists, who will receive an invitation to a two-day workshop in Amsterdam and a chance to win one of three cash prizes.

Is this a minimal bike hook? Yes, indeed, and I’m holding my hand up for a long distance high five here (air-five, as some might say). These bike hooks by Sandra Thomsen are just about as simple as you can get. Do note that they’re intended for lighter sports bikes. You’ll want to triple check that the wall is suitable and that you install the anchors correctly, otherwise you might just have a scuffed up bike and two holes in the wall, and that’s no fun at all.

Also available directly from Sandra Thomsen’s Etsy shop: fluoshop for $86.38 (+ $25.25 for shipping to the United States)

For the last three years, WantedDesign has been a standout among the design events that take place during NYCxDesign and this year was no exception. With top-notch designers, students, manufacturers, and schools all exhibiting their innovative wares and collaborations, Wanted is definitely a design destination not to be missed.
Debra Folz, who’s known for incorporating textiles and traditional craft techniques into modern design, launched some new pieces, including multilayered glass tables (above) and braided stools (below).
Karim Rashid’s presence was felt pretty much as soon as you entered the building as he designed one of the lounges up front, but also because the man himself was there in the HP booth. HP had a large-format printer on site that prints custom wallcoverings, including one of Rashid’s designs below.
We couldn’t help but love this richly textured and monochromatic rug from the Australian company TSAR Carpets.
The incredibly talented and always entertaining Brooks Atwood of Pod Design (remember when we spent the day with him??) displayed his ever-growing collection of innovative designs, including his futuristic lighting and ultralight seating.
New Zealand lighting designer David Trubridge designed a sculptural lighting installation called ‘The Elements’ that incorporated Swarovski Elements and was done in collaboration with the above mentioned TSAR Carpets.
Joe Doucet always has something to make you stop and pause and this year it was his Hadron piece...

San Diego and New York City-based architecture and design firm Colkitt & Co., recently remodeled PUMA’s SoHo location. Nathan Lee Colkitt, principal and CEO of Colkitt & Co. said, “each design element results in a distinctive twist that incorporates local influences, regional culture, as well as global features coming straight from the heart of the brand.” Every detail reflects the PUMA brand and local city life ,all the way down to the ceramic tiles that line the walls of the fitting rooms to mimic popular subway stops.
The long, narrow footprint of the store inspired Colkitt’s design team to focus on the core of the brand, PUMA footwear. The design team also implemented many digital features echoing the brands message with iPads and videos. Secondary elements include directional wood slats, neon lighting, pixelated red branding walls, exposed concrete floors, existing granite and brick walls, cast iron details, and custom tile mosaics. Colkitt’s mission was to make every aspect of the store immersive and bring the local city into the space, creating an interactive environment.

The genius of Victor Carrasco for Viccarbe, Serra is a small, portable table “designed with a belt for easy movement.” Users need just grab hold of the lightweight piece and carry it like a piece of luggage (except much more easily)! Sized for laptops, tablet computers, and other small devices, Serra is also a great piece for the Luddite who simply wants a place to rest coffee or cake. It’s perfect for readers as well, who can open up their books and magazines on the slick surface.
Portable Table with Carrying Belt

Constructed of a calibrated steel column lacquered in thermoset epoxy, Serra includes a lacquered MDF top in a range of colors and a belt made of high-resistance technical fabric. This little table is ideal for all types of contract applications, as serviceable as a good suit. Its central column enables Serra to be tucked under sofas and chairs, and its compact size makes it versatile and unassuming. Impromptu meetings at the office can happen anywhere with Serra. For hospitality, Serra is great for lounge areas, so guests can have their very own surface to commandeer.

E-mail export@viccarbe.com for purchasing information.
About the Manufacturer: Viccarbe manufactures contemporary furniture developed by the most prestigious international designers. The company is present in more than sixty countries and only manufactures in Europe under the environmental certification ISO 14001.

The area on this map, called Madla-Revheim, is the main developmental edge of Stavanger, Norway for which MVRDV and Space Group seek to implement 4000 housing units on the 780 acres site. The sector focuses housing, transportation systems and public spaces around a green center for cultivation and livestock raising. Situated at the point where urban meets rural, the area aims to be one of the first modern models for sustainable growth within metropolitan areas.
